Biography

Dr. Steven Boyd is a biomedical engineer and Professor in the Department of Radiology, Cumming School of Medicine, at the University of Calgary, with a joint appointment in the Schulich School of Engineering. He leads the Bone Imaging Laboratory and served as Director of the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health from 2016 to 2023.

His research combines high-resolution imaging, computational biomechanics and machine learning to study bone microarchitecture, estimate bone strength and assess skeletal fragility. Recent work includes external validation of microarchitecture-based fracture-risk assessment, quantitative analysis of clinical CT, and longitudinal study of bone phenotypes during ageing. His team also develops automated methods for imaging the injured knee and studies bone loss and recovery associated with spaceflight. The laboratory contributes reusable analysis workflows and benchmark resources to support reproducible musculoskeletal imaging research.

In 2016, Dr. Boyd established the Centre for Mobility and Joint Health (MoJo), a hub for clinical research. He became a Fellow of the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research in 2018 and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2026.
